PRO-LIFE WISCONSIN OPPOSES FDA APPROVAL OF OVER-THE-COUNTER HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL
For Immediate Release: July 13, 2023
(Brookfield) – The Food and Drug Administration’s decision today to approve over-the-counter hormonal birth control pills is a complete failure to protect women and children in the United States.
The primary function of the birth control pill is to prevent ovulation from occurring, but if it fails and a child is conceived, a secondary function is to thin the uterine lining and prevent implantation. This creates an unlivable environment for the newly formed baby resulting in an abortion. Pro-Life Wisconsin opposes any such drug which kills an innocent human being or contributes to the mentality that pregnancy is a disease rather than a blessing.
Not only does the birth control pill have the capability to kill a newly formed child, but countless studies show that hormonal birth control is dangerous to women’s health. Many Birth Control Pill inserts include upwards of 25 pages of warnings on the adverse effects of the drug. Users of the Pill have an increased risk of blood clotting and ectopic pregnancy, both of which can be fatal. The World Health Organization and The United Nation’s International Agency on Research of Cancer have classified combined hormonal contraceptives as Group 1 carcinogens, in the same category as asbestos. The National Cancer Institute, an official entity of the United States government, states that hormonal contraception is linked to cervical, breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers. Yet today, the FDA has chosen to ignore all these warnings and approve this dangerous drug for widespread use.
Just as hormonal birth control deceives a woman’s body by disrupting her natural hormonal cycle and filling her with synthetic hormones, the FDA is deceiving women across the United States into thinking this dangerous drug is safe and effective.
We are fortunate to live in a time when we know more about the complexities of women's reproductive health than ever before. Hormonal birth control is lazy medicine; it is not healthcare. It does not fix something that’s broken, rather it breaks something that is vital to women’s health and prosperity. This is why Pro-Life Wisconsin continues to educate on the harms of hormonal birth control and advocate for natural methods of family planning such as Fertility Awareness Methods and NAPRO Technology which aid, not harm, a woman’s body. These methods help women understand their cycles, identify hormonal imbalances, achieve or postpone pregnancy, and empower women to pursue health and wholeness.
