PRO-LIFE WISCONSIN REACTS TO SCOTUS DRAFT OPINION LEAK IN DOBBS V. JACKON WOMEN’S HEALTH CLINIC
May 3, 2022
(Brookfield, WI) – Never before in the history of the United States Supreme Court has a breach of trust and security of this magnitude occurred as with the leak of the Court’s draft opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Clinic. Last night, POLITICO shared leaked documentation of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion, dated February 2022. The draft opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, outlines an overrule of both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which would have the effect of returning the abortion decision to the states.
This is not the final decision from the United States Supreme Court, but it gives us much to hope for.
If the draft opinion does indeed hold, our work only intensifies in the effort to ban abortion without exception in our state statutes and enshrine the right to life in our Wisconsin Constitution. As it stands, the Wisconsin Constitution says you must be born to be equally free and independent, and you must be born to enjoy fundamental rights, including the precious right to life. We absolutely must amend our state constitution to provide equal protection for our preborn brothers and sisters in our state’s highest law.
Matt Sande, Pro-Life Wisconsin Legislative Director, commented, “If Roe and Casey are overturned, Pro-Life Wisconsin will lead the fight to enact a total protection statutory abortion ban in Wisconsin. We will further fight to enshrine the right to life in our Wisconsin Constitution. If the state constitution is not amended and a future Wisconsin Supreme Court finds a right to abortion in that document, as recently occurred with the Kansas and Iowa high courts, all our pro-life laws will be in peril. That must not happen.”
Pro-Life Wisconsin State Director, Dan Miller, commented, “Our prayer at Pro-Life Wisconsin has always been that we live to see the day where no more babies die and no more mothers cry. One baby lost to abortion is too many, but 64 million is fully one-fifth of our nation’s population. We give thanks to God for his patience with our nation and beg His almighty forgiveness.”
We pray that the fateful Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey decisions will be fully overturned in the final opinion of the United States Supreme Court.
