Everyday, every moment, every place you go is an opportunity to spread the pro-life message.
It was a Thursday evening, and I was running around town trying to find a dress for an upcoming event when I approached the dressing room at TJMAXX, kindly handed my items to the attendant for her to count, and waited. It was in this moment that she looked up, saw the Pro-Life Wisconsin logo on my jacket and began sharing her story so freely. “Wow! I really love your jacket!” I thanked her for the compliment, and she continued without pause. “Isn’t it crazy what is going on in some of these states with their laws saying that you can kill a baby at the very moment they’re born and even after if the mom wants it?” (She was referring to New York in particular.) I just don’t understand why anyone would do that when you could just as easily put that baby up for adoption and give it life. You see, my sister and I were both adopted as babies and some of my cousins were too. It just doesn’t make sense to me why that couldn’t happen with these kids too instead of killing them like this.” We went on to talk for about 15-20 minutes in the entryway, and I was in complete awe of how this woman shared her story so willingly. It was as if she had been internalizing all of these thoughts and finally saw an opportunity to share them - with a complete stranger.

Yet another time, as I was ordering bakery for a friend at Panera, the cashier saw my same jacket and said “Wow! That’s pretty neat,” as he pointed to the Pro-Life Wisconsin logo. I thanked him and told him how I work for Pro-Life Wisconsin which is a non-profit dedicated to protecting life at all stages. He remarked, “Well that’s great! I’ve never heard of you guys before, but that’s really something. My niece got pregnant a few years back and we all told her she shouldn’t have an abortion because we would help her. We said our family would be there to raise the kid with her. You know. That’s what people need I think. She had support from us, and we all love that kid.” Once again, I stood in awe, marveling at how freely he shared his testimony (and thanking God that no one was behind me in line so that this moment could occur)! We wrapped up the conversation in time, I thanked him for all that he had shared, and he thanked me for all the work Pro-Life Wisconsin does!

In both of these situations I learned one very important lesson. People are eager to share their stories, if only they are given the opportunity. For these two individuals, they saw their opportunity in a complete stranger and chose to share a part of themselves.
