Federal Judge Rules Election is Still On, Makes Changes to Absentee Voting

By Matt Sande, Pro-Life Wisconsin Legislative Director

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge William Conley rejected calls to postpone this Tuesday’s spring general election due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that he does not have the authority to do so. However, Judge Conley did make the following changes to the absentee voting process:

1) The deadline to request an absentee ballot has been extended to TODAY, FRIDAY, APRIL 3 at 5:00 PM.

2) The requirement that absentee voters have a witness sign their ballot envelope has been removed so long as the absentee voter provides written affirmation that he or she could not safely do so due to coronavirus fears.

3) The deadline for absentee ballots to be received by mail or in-person at local municipal clerks offices has been extended to Monday, April 13 at 4:00 PM.

*The Republican Party of Wisconsin has made an emergency appeal to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, requesting it to stay Judge Conley’s decision.

Voting recommendations:

  • VOTE EARLY IN-PERSON TODAY or VOTE IN-PERSON ON ELECTION DAY, Tuesday April 7, at your local municipal clerk’s office.

  • If you are uncomfortable voting in-person, REQUEST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT ONLINE by 5:00 PM TODAY (an online request is the best way to ensure that you get your ballot quickly mailed to you);

  • Once you receive and complete your absentee ballot, IMMEDIATELY DELIVER YOUR ABSENTEE BALLOT IN-PERSON at your local municipal clerk’s office if you are comfortable doing so. Otherwise, IMMEDIATELY MAIL IN YOUR ABSENTEE BALLOT.

Thank you! EVERY VOTE COUNTS!!
